Philosophy of the Office of College Counseling

Our Mission

The philosophy of Milken stems from the idea that the world rests on three pillars: Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Hasadim.  The college counseling office makes up a part of the pillar of Avodah, broadly translated as orientation, or direction. The college counselors help each student research and select colleges appropriate to his or her interests and demonstrated abilities, and assist with making the transition from a Jewish high school to a college or university environment. To that end, students are made aware of the opportunities available at each college to study, practice and celebrate Judaism.

We firmly believe that success is not defined by the number of students who gain admission to a particular college or list of colleges, but by the appropriateness of each placement and the contributions our students make to the colleges which they attend. The college counselor, however, comprises only a portion of the pillar of Avodah. The rest of the pillar is held up by the students and their families, working together to provide the proper direction to find the place where an individual student's gifts will be most appreciated.

Mission in Action

The Office of College Counseling provides an exemplary curriculum that heightens and builds self-awareness, self-exploration, and self-expression among our students as they make the transition from high school to college.

The program consists of bi-monthly community-building instructional group sessions with juniors and seniors that address various topics, including standardized testing, resources for researching colleges and universities, scholarship opportunities, Jewish life on college campuses, application procedures, self-assessment and resume writing, and interviewing skills.  Individual meetings with students and their families take place on a regular basis and enable the office to personalize the process and provide support and encouragement.

Counselors also encourage students to maintain contact with colleges and universities. To help facilitate this, college representatives are invited to visit the campus each fall to meet with students and present information about their respective institutions.

The program is centered on the idea that the college search should be an overall learning and developmental process, and as such, each student must participate fully from practical, responsible, and ethical perspectives.

Realizing The Mission

Success is not defined by the number of students who gain admission to a particular selection of colleges and universities, but rather by the appropriateness of each placement and the contributions students can make to the colleges they attend. The Office of College Counseling creates and implements effective programming to awaken and support students’ realization of their greatest potential. As a result, Milken graduates experience great success and make meaningful and valuable contributions to their colleges, to their communities, and to Judaism.
