Advising

Advising

As a part of the total school program, each student at Milken is assigned an advisor who we anticipate will remain with the student for four years. The intention of the Advisory program is to "support and challenge" students as they mature into young adults. Student attendance during advisory is important and mandatory.

The role of the advisor is essential. The advisor provides a daily contact for the student, a source of information about school and school events, a conduit for communication to and from home, a guide in the planning of academic programs, and when needed an advocate for the student.

One of the major tasks of the advisor concerns academic advising. The range of choices around courses and academics is large at Milken, and we encourage students and families to plan ahead in considering courses and academic programs. Milken beileves that the best program of study is one where we create "an individual program to meet individual needs." This requires considerable effort from the student, the family, and the advisor. Academic planning for the subsequent year begins in January of each year with a conference between the advisor and the students.

Academic oversight and advising is a year long activity, and students will often confer with advisors about class progress and academic needs. Our academic advising planning program begins in January and includes discussions about current classes, the proposed classes for the next year and the long-term plans for academic success. Advisors help students complete course requests and review teacher suggestions.
