The Academic Program

The academic program at Milken is rigorous; one of the goals of the school is to provide each student with a preparation for college. As a college preparatory independent school, Milken admits students who show the potential for academic excellence.

We offer a range of Advanced Placement classes, Honors classes, and college preparatory classes. The school's curriculum is demanding and varied. We believe that it is important to create a program for each student to meet individual needs, and we work to meet those needs through academic advising done in the advisory program.

Upper School Academic Program

We believe that students should have both a grounding in liberal education and the opportunity to excel in the areas of their academic passions. During grades 9 and 10 we recommend that students take classes which both meet their needs and challenge their academic abilities. In grades 11 and 12, we recommend that students work toward excelling in one or more areas of expertise.

Centers of Excellence

The Upper School sponsors five different "Centers of Excellence" programs which can allow students special opportunities for superior academic achievement.

Diplomas of Distinction

Core to the academic program at Milken is the development of "Diplomas of Distinction." Students who exceed the graduation requirements and register for additional classes or participate in experiential learning relevant to their areas of academic interest and who prepare for and deliver a Senior Exhbition are awarded "Diplomas of Distinction." The diploma and the transcript are labeled according the student's achievement. Over the next two years the school will be working to develop Diplomas of Distinction in the following areas.

Fine Arts and Design

Hebrew and Judaic Studies

International Studies and Humanities

Leadership and Community Development
