Dress Standards

The Upper and Middle School dress standards are grounded in Milken Community High School’s desire to foster the Jewish value of tzniut (modesty), to balance individual expression and community standards, and to encourage an environment of scholarship and community. Dress will reflect these goals, be conducive to good behavior and promote the business of being a student. While it is impractical to have an exclusive list of acceptable and unacceptable attire, the following examples should provide parents and students with reasonable guidance.
Permitted Clothing Includes:

GENERAL RULES FOR ALL CLOTHING

• Clothing must be in good repair, free of rips and tears.
• Underwear is to be fully covered at all times.
• All graphics and writing are to be tasteful.
• Milken Community High School logo apparel is allowed.
• Spirit/dress-down days are to follow the modesty component of the dress code.

SHIRTS AND TOPS

• All shirts and tops are to cover the shoulders, waist, midriff and back.
• Necklines are to appropriately cover cleavage.
• Sweaters, sweatshirts, coats and jackets are allowed.

PANTS, SHORTS AND SKIRTS

• Fitted khaki-style, denim or other dress pants
• Fitted khaki-style or denim shorts
• For girls, skirts whose hemline is no higher than the midpoint between hip and knee
• Shorts whose hemline is no higher than the midpoint between hip and knee
• Leggings or thick tights are allowed but must be worn under a skirt or shorts whose hemline is no higher than the midpoint between hip and knee
(Sweatpants, athletic shorts and athletic attire are permissible only in the form of Milken logo apparel)

MILKEN LOGO APPAREL

Polo-style shirts, oxford-style shirts, fleeces and sweatshirts are available through the student store and may be worn on campus.

SHOES

We recommend that students wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes with a back strap.

HATS

Hats may be worn outside of class.

BODY PIERCING/TATTOOS

Judaism teaches that human beings were created B’tzelem Elohim (In the Image of God). The tradition teaches that the human body is a vessel of God and must be treated with respect. In this spirit, students at Milken may not have any visible body piercing (including the tongue) except for the ears, nor may students have any visible tattoos.

FRIDAYS

In anticipation of Shabbat and in a spirit of community, students are encouraged to wear white to school on Fridays.

DECIDING WHAT IS APPROPRIATE

Milken faculty, staff and administration determine appropriate dress. We all acknowledge that what might seem to be in good taste for one person might not be so for another. Nevertheless, on the Milken Community High School campuses, the final decision about tzniut (modesty), good taste and appropriateness is and will be determined by the faculty, staff and administration.

Baring the midriff, showing shoulders and exposing undergarments, while possibly in style, are choices to be made between students and parents for out-of-school wear.

We trust that you will all want to create a community that rises to its highest standards.

CONSEQUENCES FOR WEARING INAPPROPRIATE DRESS

The School may discipline students for violation of the dress code. The following procedure will usually be followed for dress code violations. Students dressed inappropriately will be sent to the main office and then be sent home for the day. There are no second chances as the school believes that appropriate dress is important.

Upon further infractions, students are to appear before the Student Judiciary Court where consequences will be determined.

Multiple infractions may directly jeopardize a student’s ability to continue in good standing at Milken Community High School.

Specific Guidelines for Physical Education Dress Code

All students must follow the Physical Education/Swimming dress code. Appropriate uniforms will be available from the Athletic Department.

Swimsuits are required for swimming class. Girls’ swimsuits must be one-piece, competition-style tank suits. High-on-the-leg, low-cut suits, bikinis and mono-kinis are not appropriate.
