Student Judiciary Committee
Milken Community High School values and appreciates the voice of its students in helping to make decisions about student conduct.
The students are nominated by faculty and voted into their positions by students. The purpose of the student judiciary, as described below, is to create a voice of recommendation for students in regard to the consequences involving breaches of ethical conduct.
Preamble for the Student Judiciary Committee
We, the students of Milken Community High School, establish this Student Judiciary Council to accept responsibility for our community and to ensure fairness, ethical practice, and justice in all aspects of student life.
Statement of Purpose
By providing students with a forum from which to discuss conduct that is not consistent with the standards and values of Milken Community High School, the Student Judiciary Council (from hereon referred to as SJC) intends to promote personal responsibility, social accountability, and ultimately, greater trust within the Milken community. Moreover, the SJC serves as a critical advisory mechanism to the administration and faculty in the areas of disciplinary standards and sanctioning policies. The recommendations made by the SJC to the administration are based on Gemilut Hasidim (ethical practices) and school policy. The philosophy of a student judiciary council is rooted in Jewish values, which seek to provide all members of the community an opportunity to gain fairness through action.
In incidents of possible or alleged violations of important school rules or standards, the SJC will address directly the accused student or students, consider degrees of culpability, and will subsequently recommend to the administration sanctions that are then approved or modified by the Principal or appropriate Assistant Principal.. In the event that the Principal or Assistant Principal alter or turn down a recommendation from the SJC, the Upper School Principal or Assistant Principal will, as appropriate, meet with the SJC to clarify the decision.
The Upper School Principal and appropriate Assistant Principal will determine the cases that will go to the SJC. In the event that the incident includes significant personal issues and/or external legal considerations, the Administration may decide to exclude the SJC from direct involvement OR may utilize the SJC in an advisory capacity regarding the incident.
