Make a gift to Milken

Respect of Self and Others

Standard 1: Respect of Self and Others (I and Thou):

We value each member of our pluralistic community. At Milken, that means everyone. No one is more worthy or less worthy of kavod. We treat each other with honesty, dignity, and respect. Courteous behavior makes it easier to successfully navigate what can be a confusing world. We treat any guest at Milken with the utmost respect, because our behavior is a reflection of who we are as a school. It should go without saying that when we have a guest at town meeting we honor that person by actively listening. We communicate with others with civility, whether it is in email, by phone, or in person. It is not hard to treat each person the way you want to be treated. Lashon Hara (negative speech), needless to say, is especially discourteous.

At Milken, we treat others equally regardless of differences in race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender. In fact, we are a community that celebrates and embraces difference, not only to learn and grow from each other, but also to prepare students for life after Milken.

Harassment

All community members have the right to feel safe on Milken’s campus. Harassment in any form, including but not limited to physical or emotional bullying, repeated teasing, hazing, religious, racial or sexual harassment unacceptable and absolutely prohibited. It does not matter if the harassment occurs face-to-face or by technological means. State law requires us to define sexual harassment.

“Sexual harassment may include any unwelcome action that is sexual in content or implication. This includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests, or demands for sexual favors, and other verbal, physical, or visual conduct of a sexual nature. For example, it may include actions such as unwelcome actions, sex-oriented teasing or jokes; unwelcome sexual flirtation; subtle pressure for sexual activities; physical contact such as touching, petting, or brushing against another; or unwelcome display of pictures, cartoons, or drawings that are sexual in nature. All students are expected to refrain from all behavior or conduct that could be interpreted as harassment toward any member of the Milken community. It is the responsibility of all members of the community to report harassment to an adult."

Drugs and Alcohol

Our tradition teaches that the body is sacred. We expect students to come to school well rested, well fed and ready to take on the challenges of the day. The use of tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs or the misuse of prescription drugs, impairs one’s ability to be a productive member of our school community. It not only violates Jewish values but also the law. Students in possession of, or under the influence of these substances, whether on campus or at a school-sponsored event, will face serious disciplinary action.

Faculty Care Team

The knowledge of the presence of alcohol and other drugs places a burden on those who choose not to use and on those worried about their peers. Based on our core Jewish value that our body is a gift from God, the school has established a Faculty Care Team. The function of the Faculty Care Team is to intervene directly. When appropriate, referrals are made by concerned members of the community. The Faculty Care Team will seek to help those who have not broken school policy but are struggling with issues related to substance abuse. In this way, the school will make every effort to show its concern for the well-being of children. (Download the referral form)
